Editorial Review :
Cilio is a fine German brand headquartered in the famous steel town of Solingen and is well know for its high quality products. Cilio's motto is "lifestyle at home". For great coffee the traditional way, place a #4 paper or mesh coffee filter inside this porcelain holder and brew directly into a coffee pot or insulated server.

Good Product
Well, first off, let me say that I'm happy with this purchase. The cone is solidly constructed and appears to be high-quality. The handle is not "linguini thin" as one reviewer said. It is normal, by my standards (I was pleasantly surprised). It is not made in USA however, as the headline/name suggests. It is a German product. No biggie--still a well-manufactured item.
One reviewer commented that the drain hole is too large, and they get weak coffee. Please look online to see how to make coffee using a filter cone. I've been using filter cones for years (the yucky plastic kind until I got my ceramic cone!) and this is my method: run water through the paper filter first. Put coffee (plenty) into paper filter/cone. Now this is imperative--pour just a tablespoon or two of hot water onto the grounds. Wait. Let the coffee "bloom" for at least 30 seconds. One minute is better. Then slowly pour more water in.
Okay that's my review. Cheers and happy coffee drinking!

Perfect sized bottom for small openings
Thank you to the person who posted pictures and information on the size of the ring on the base! That kind of information should be in the product description (Frieling Cilio: 2 7/16"). It took me three tries before I found a #4 filter that would fit into the top of my cool vintage coffee carafe. I like the porcelain but I hope I don't break it. Better than the alternative plastic I guess. This filter holder would fit on top of just about any container since the ring is much smaller than other brands.

I feel Stupid
How could I waste so much time on the other methods of brewing coffee? I get all excited in the morning just to slowly pour hot water into this magical thing. Thanks Frieling USA Cilio Porcelain Filter Holder makers, now I feel stupid.

Weak coffee
It fits on any cup with no problem, easy to clean, and its durable. The problem I see is the opening is too large and the water pours through too quickly for a strong cup of coffee. Different grinds did not make any difference. I am back to my Black and Decker one cup brewer which is consistently better and has no problem with a strong cup of java.

Excellent
I have had this for several months and used it with the reusable coffee filter. Loved it until the cat broke it. I will buy another.

Editorial Review :
Whether you drink a little coffee or a lot, the Harold Import No. 4 Porcelain Filter Cone will save you time and money. Keep those hard earned dollars in your pocket. Save precious counter space. You don’t need expensive and bulky coffee machines to have great coffee at home. With the Filter Cone, fresh brewed coffee is quick and easy. Simply place coffee filter in cone, add ground coffee, place cone over coffee cup and pour boiling water over the coffee grounds. Once your coffee is brewed, simply discard filter and grounds. Throw the cone in the dishwasher and voile. … you’re done and ready to enjoy a cup of fresh brewed coffee. Quick, easy and inexpensive. Not only will it be quick and easy, it’ll be better; most people who drink coffee prefer a certain brew – strong, medium or mild – and with this devise you can create individual-inch cups of coffee for your guests … or let them brew their own cup of coffee, the way they like it – at the strength they prefer. You can’t do that with a conventional coffee maker. No. 4 coffee filters, not included.
Customer Review :
Durable, but fast drip time
This is a heavy piece of ceramic and I agree with others who note it will last a long time. My one complaint is that this version has 3 drain holes, whereas the Frieling Cilio (which I have never used, but considered buying) has only 1 drain hole. I wish I could plug at least one of these holes in my HIC Filter Cone because I feel it drains too quickly, thereby preventing a stronger brew. But, at the end of the day, its not THAT big of a deal; I do get a decent brew that is superb compared to the machine brew.

nothing like ceramic
great replacement for 40 year old ceramic melitta. has multiple holes for less clogging. many of the new melittas only have one and they are all plastic!

excellent filter cone
The cone is as advertised - fits a #4 filter (this is the large size) and is made of sturdy porcelain.

made in china
i was disappointed that this item was made in china. although it does its job well i can not help but be concerned about the glaze. i wish there were some way to be assured that the glaze meets high safety standards

works fine, more of a review of Amazon customer relations
First one I got was chipped. Called amazon and they sent a replacement at no cost and it arrived the following day. I can't say enough about Amazon.com and their customer service. I have had very little reason to call customer service and I do order a lot of stuff from Amazon.com but when I have had to call them I am not left on hold and they go out of their way to treat their customers right. As to the new filter cone, no problem and it does what I want it to do.

ill-fitting lid
The coffee pot lids are not standardized. The supplier was quite helpful but the first lid was too small for the pot and fell off,the replacement lid was slightly too large and stuck in the pot and could not be removed. I was sent a second ensemble, pot and lid, and this time the fit was adequate. But the product itself is incompetently made. Melitta Porcelain Manual Coffee Maker

Awful
For starters this lid does not fit. It is supposed to be held on by two little "bumps" on the edge of the lid but they are not flared out far enough. The end result is that the lid easily falls off.
Further, the quality of the ceramic glaze is terrible. There are several spots on my piece where the glaze was missed and the raw porcelain shows through.
Contrary to other reviewers, the water drips though WAY too fast. When i make a single cup the water is fully through the cone in less than 30 seconds. This is far too fast given that coffee should ideally steep in the water for 1.5 to 2 minutes.
The handles are also thin and flimsy. They look like they would easily snap off. Lastly, this item is made in China so I'm concerned about the lead content of the glaze used. Given the shoddy overall quality I would not be surprised if they were also careless about what went into the glaze materials. Do yourself a favor and find something made in Japan.

Don't be fooled by the 3 star rating
First of all, I'd like to say that I am a fixer. If I purchase something that doesn't work like it should, "I fix it".....Not the case here....I gave this item a one star, and that is even too much.....The porcelain pot is very poorly engineered....It "looks" great, but that's where it ends.
The top "rests" on its base with a thin rim and has no support.....If you are not careful, it can easily be knocked off and broken.....Not for someone that has small children puttering around, or someone that is a little "shakey" at hand....You would think that Melitta would have put a locking grove on the top to lock the lid, but it didn't...Keep in mind that this is "ceramic", so that if you knock it off, its going to chip,or even break. (not like a plastic one).
The "groves" in the top ARE very slight, and it doesn't matter what kind of paper filter you use...IT CLOGS....Found that a "permanent" filter works a "little" better....But it is still a slow and "pain in the butt" process....Lets face it, when you get up in the morning and want a cup of coffee, you don't want to have to mess with the coffee pot to "coax" it to work.
The ceramic pot, if you are lucky enough to get a pot full, does not keep the coffee hot...Its simple.....Put hot coffee into a "cold" ceramic pot, and you have "warm" coffee....So the only option is to pre-heat the pot in hot water first before making the pot.....One royal pain in the butt...And I like MY coffee hot!
And lets say that you are lucky enough to get a full pot of coffee, that is hot....its too small for us serious coffee drinkers....Doesn't hold much.
WORST product Melitta ever made AND expensive......My wife wanted it so I got it for her as a gift.....Used it for a week, and now it sits in the cupboard gathering dust....Even she says it a piece of junk, and she NEVER admits she made a mistake buying ANYTHING.....But it DOES look nice.....
Could have bought a really nice unit for the price I paid for this one....But did I tell you it looked nice?????
YES, its that bad....YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED>
Buy at your own risk......

Disappointed to say the least
I have used Melitta pots for around 30 years. I have always had the plastic filter cone with the clear glass pot. The coffee always ran freely from the cone to the pot. I tried this pot because I thought it was an upgrade. I had a lot of difficulty getting the coffee to flow. The pot is visually beautiful, but I plan to send it back and go back to the pot I was using before.

Melitta Porcelain Manual Coffee Maker
An excellent small porcelain coffee maker for the single person or a couple. Makes enough coffee for one or two. It works for me as a single person who enjoys the lovely porcelain coffee pot to serve an elegant cup of coffee. Melitta does an artistic style serving coffee pot.
