    Questions & Answers
Question : Can anyone give a moving estimate?
Can anyone give me a rough estimate what it costs to move? I am moving less than 2 miles away and just want to hire someone to move the big furniture. I dont have too much to move....just a dresser, dining room table, china cabinet, desk, futon, and maybe a couch. Both houses have 2 stories where the furniture will need to be moved.

    Answer:
You should contact multiple moving companies and request for FREE estimates before you select any particular company. Your items are very typical of a house move so I don't foresee you paying too much money. Just make sure you get multiple estimates. A good starting point to search for local moving companies is http://www.movingcompany411.com Good luck!

Question : I have a Louis Marx and Son Furniture Set from Covington Ky?
This is a set, a dining room table, buffet and blind china cabinet from Louis Marx and Son in Covington KY. This company closed during the great depression. the markings on the back of the furniture state 190 c on all pieces. Does anyone have any idea how much this could sell for, or who I might be able to get to find information out about these pieces.

    Answer:
An antique furniture dealer could help you.

Question : Any idea on what it costs to move 2 bedrooms about 600 miles?
furniture only... no boxes. 2 twin beds, one queen, dresser, mirror, dining table, china cabinet, living room furniturefrom stuart, fl to lexington,scNeed a moving company. Won't be doing any of the labor myself. No boxes. Furniture only. 2 bdr and living and dining room.

    Answer:
I'd guess around 2.5 - 3 grand. May be even less as you say there's just furniture to be moved. There are a lot of companies that would ball park it for you in their sites, you might as well try those. However, an accurate estimate could only be available once someones gets to visit and have a look at the stuff you'd like to move. I've listed one link I know that gives you a good estimate right away, check out their estimate..Hope this helps, Good Luck!

Question : Value of dining room suite by Marietta Chair Co/circa 1930?
My elderly parents (ages 86 and 90 years) are downsizing and moving. They have a lovely mahogany dining room suite (china cabinet, sideboard, table with leaves and 8 chairs) marked Marietta Chair Company. It is in pristine condition and I would like to get the maximum $ for it for them as they are on a very fixed income. This set was not new when they purchased it in 1949 and I am guessing it is at least circa 1930.I have Googled Marietta Chair Co. and pretty much come up empty handed. Any suggestions for how to go about tracking a value for this furniture before I put it on the market for them? Thanks,Teddy Maude

    Answer:
The best idea would be to contact a local auction house in your area and ask them what previous mahogany dining sets have sold for in your area. If they are cooperative, email them a picture and ask for their opinion. In my experience and prior observation, I would estimate 800-1200 dollars at a professional, upscale auction. You might get more than 1200 if you were to sell at a consignment/antique shop but keep in mind, they also ask for a part of the profits that is generally greater than at auction. Large sets of furniture generally do not command high prices at auction because people need the suitable space as well as to arrange transportation. The maker you listed also appears to be a regional furniture maker, so you would be best selling it locally (not on eBay) in case someone is interested in having regional pieces in their home. Unfortunately regional furniture makers do not command prices above standard for their pieces, it is only when you get to truly famous makers/designers that there is a premium paid for the manufacturer's lmark. I hope this helps, but definitely contact a local, reputable auction house first because they can tell you how furniture suites are selling in your area. And respect what the appraiser has to say. If they appraise the pieces at one price, do not expect them to sell for 10x that. People sometimes figure sentimental value into the value of their possessions.

Question : What else can we use a formal living room for? Already have a family room.?
Our house has a family room, a dining room and a "formal living room". We don't dine, entertain and host, so I think the formal living room is a waste of space to fill with "nice" furniture, china cabinets, etc. The tv/sofa will be in the family room. What can we use the formal living room for? It is too big for an office, I am not interested in the pool table/air hockey idea. Any other suggestions?

    Answer:
We set ours up as a multi purpose room. We have a sofa bed and the second TV in there (and the Wii and X box connected) plus a desk and computer and bookcases. So it's like the study/guest bedroom/chill out zone/ game room/ reading room/ watch something different to everyone else room.

Question : what would be the best color or stain to match black dining room set of black w mahoghony top?
Dining room furniture is matte black w mahogony top and china cabinet is also black w mahogony accents. The home we purchased is circa 1900 w 2 bulit-in cabinets in the dining room which were refinished in a shotty manner and stained cherry but look horrible. What other color may be suitable w my dining set??/

    Answer:
About a year ago, We painted the laminate sink cabinet & mirror in my bathroom with a red primer, and then a light layer of black on top (done with a foam brush). It looks great, almost like mahogany. Perhaps you could try that technique.

Question : What is a good price to ask for antique dining furniture?
I have an antique (1920 +/-) Duncan Phyfe style dining room set that I want to sell. I'm having a difficult time trying to find an appraiser in my area (SE Michigan) who's interested in giving an appraisal only. I run into mostly antique dealers that just want to offer a price so they can turn around and resell it for double. What would be a reasonable price to ask for a solid mahogony dining room set (table, 6 chairs, china cabinet, buffet) in good condition?

    Answer:
You answered your own question. Get antique dealers to offer what they want to pay, then advertise the items at double the amount. If the price is reasonable and someone is interested, they will buy. If you get no responses, lower the price. the antique dealers are in business to make a profit. They may have to keep the item for along time in their store. they have operating expenses to cover. so don't begrudge them the profit they make. The fair value of any item is determined when a buyer offers a price and the seller accepts it. For unique items such as yours, you can set any price you want, but you will get only what someone is willing to pay.

Question : How much should I sell my furniture for?
I am down sizing my living arrangements and I am needing to get rid of some furniture. I am not sure how much I should sell it for, is there a web site to give me some pricing guidelines to follow? I am needing to sell a dinette table, dining room table with 6 chairs(still has plastic covering over the cushions) and china cabinet, an old vanity and an entertainment center.

    Answer:
Go to ebay and do a search for the type of furniture you are selling, then go to the left of the page and click on completed listings. You then will get a page of items that are similiar to yours and you can furthur group the listings from highest to lowest. Just make sure you type in used. You can also sell on ebay and specific pickup only.

Question : I want to paint my formal dining room set black. Any tips? I can't afford to screw it up.?
My style has changed since I bought this china cabinet, table and chairs but they are in great condition. Not cheap furniture and I am alittle scared that I could really screw this up. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. I will have to reupholster the chairs so any tips on that would be helpful too. I think i will use an oil based paint...but what about a primer or a sealer?

    Answer:
sand, or degloss the existing finish. prime with a bonding/stain blocking primer, tinted to deep gray, then apply 2 to 3 coats of paint. spraying it would give the best finish, but if you must brush and or roll, add penetrol to oil based paint or floetrol to latex, to provide a self leveling component( to reduce brush marks). honestly, i would get pricing from a local industrial painter who could spray it all. you would get the best finish that way, and it would be no work for you.
