My boyfriend's mother decided to contribute our new furniture fund and buy us a nearly brand-new living and dining room set from a friend. The furniture is in great condition and we'd be crazy to turn it down but it completely clashes with our decor so far.Our kitchen and dining room are various shades of slate grey and navy blue. The dining room opens into the living room which has remained an eggshell color. What should we paint the living room to accent the furniture? Are there any ideas of something we can do that won't make us have to repaint the dining room?I've thought about slip covers but I'd like to see someone else's ideas first.Run wild! I'm open for many ideas.
Answer:
About the best I can come up with would be for you to paint the living room a khaki type color that would go with the eggplant purple and the olive green. If you are lucky and one of the loose pillows has both colors on it, then take one with you when you go looking at paint chips.

Dining room tables are generally wood. So, matching chairs are made out of wood. You can get padded chairs, but they're expensive. You can also get pads that sit on the chair seat in a variety of colors and patterns.

Hi! My husband and I are trying to start decorating our dining room. We can't afford to buy any new furniture (like most newlyweds) so we always gladly accept any furniture that is given to us. My aunt and uncle gifted us with a small dining room table and two chairs (that we want to use in the dining room.) The problem we are having is that the two don't match at all, both in style and color. You can sand down the chairs and buy the correct color to stain the chairs that match the table. But I do not think that looks bad with the colors. I like the mixture myself. That is a nice set.

Question : Should my dining room furniture match my cupboards?
Open concept kitchen, table and chairs and such are now a maple finish, new kitchen is a mahogany finish. Dining area runs right into kitchen. Should I have matching furniture?

No, just find other ways to tie the rooms together, for example, if you have stainless steel appliances, get a stainless steel vase or bowl for the table. If you have red placemats, get red accents for the kitchen. Having wood that is different finishes, but still looks good together shows that you put some thought and creativity into the room. It won't look like you walked into the showroom and cashed in on the maple finish close-out sale.

I think one issue you should resolve before paint is the fact that you'd bend to the will of another for a color choice,,, especially if YOU like the drapes. Color matching is computerized and there are millions of choices. I'd match the color, paint it on one wall, and do the others in an egg nog creme color.Just my two "Sense"

Question : I want to re-paint my dining room table legs and chairs. What kind of paint should I use?
The table has a wood top with green legs/base and green chairs with a cream colored seat cushion. I want to paint it black to go with the new mirror I just bought for the wall. What type of paint do I use on wood furniture?
Answer:
I would definitely recommend priming it. you should use a latex primer sealer designed to stick to glossy surfaces. then paint with a latex interior paint in the finish of your choice. i would suggest a semi-gloss to give you a better/more durable finish. i would not suggest using an oil, as they are getting to be very expensive, and a lot a regions will be forced by the EPA to stop selling in the next couple years. also, try to get a premixed black. don't let the paint store tint it black. if the store you go to doesn't have black already on the shelf, go to another store. if they mix it, the paint wont do as well. i would apply a couple coats of paint and not coat with a lacquer/varnish. these types of product WILL YELLOW over time. they get more yellow, and cloudy as time goes by. if you MUST clear coat, use a latex polyurethane. it will stay completely clear. Question : who made my dining room furniture?
I have some dining room furniture and I would like to buy the hutch, I bought it about 13 years ago and I am certain that they still make it. It was made in canada NB or QC..I think. It is solid maple and the chairs have three flowers carved in the back rest. It is a very common design but I cant find the manufacture anywhere online and there is no indication anywhere on the set.

Question : What other furniture goes in a dining room besides the table in chairs?
Also, when should you get a round table and when should you get a rectangular one? My dining room is small.

A hutch to put the dishes and things in. A rectangular table with a leaf that can be taken out so it will take up less room and can be put in when company comeswould work.
