Questions & Answers
Question : Why is it that at dining tables only the two head chairs have hand rests?
http://www.chinatraderonline.com/Files/Household/Furniture/Dinning-Room-Furniture/Dining-Table-21475 543957.jpghttp://www.furniturehomedesign.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/extendable-dining-table.jpg

Answer:
Because traditionally, they were made for the head of the household (husband) and his wife.Or....King and Queen,Lord and Lady..etc. The chairs signified status and power over all that were at the table.

Question : what do you think?
we've got my husbands sister staying with us at the moment which is all good, but when she cleans the house, she moves things around or changes things, like today she put a different table cloth on the table and shortened the table (its an extendable table) and moved my things around on it. And it just annoys me she changes things and i dont really like the way it looks but i feel rude changing it back to my way, what should i do?

Answer:
How long is she staying for? And can you be honest and tell her you don't like it.... for peace sake and if you can - put up with it... if not maybe your husband could say something.. i now how awkward it is - we lived with my fiance's sister for 6 months - and she didnt once pay rent!!!!!! and i didnt know how or what to say - and there was no 'yahoo answers' back then :) hope you can keep your sanity and i hope someone can help good luck

Question : Can you give advice, because confusion is eating me up?
Currently, I am working since almost four years with this company, no upgrade, and no salary or jobs promotion, which mean 4 years and I am still standing on the same desk and table. My contract with this company is extendable.I received an offer from another agency, better salary , better chances for job promotion and better workplace but their contract is for 9 months , the chance of extending depend on the fund coming from their HQ. First job is boring, cause hell of stress, unhealthy workplace but extendable contract.Second job is interesting, promising but none extendable contract after the 30th of Sep2010What would you do if you were in my place?

Answer:
My first consideration would be my current financial committments. If you took a better job that does not offer seccure financial future, could you manage until you found another job? If you could, and this new job could also give you more experience which would, in turn help you get an even better job, I would take it. If you are olnly just coping financially in your current job and would be in trouble if you were unemployed at some point for say.... maybe 6 months, and could not pay rent or mortgage, car payments, credit cards etc.,- with no family to help you, then you should stay in this current job that is making you unhappy until you find something better to move to that will guarantee you financial security.Having said that, if you have family that would support you if the new job did not, for some reason get renewed in 9 months and until such time as you found another job, then I would most definitely take it!. Latest statistics I saw were that young peple changed jobs approximately every 12 months. They would gt as much experience from one job, then move on to the next and the next and the next. They always eemed to get more money and in the case studies I saw, were getting the top jobs within a few years. Great for them, but not so good for the employers that would invest time and money in training them!

Question : Extendable table comes apart.?
I have an extendable table with one extra leaf. I don't need the extra leaf on a regular basis, and I don't have the space to accommodate it on a daily basis. When I don't have the leaf in the table tends to slip apart. Right now we have what I would consider a permanent solution to the problem. Two metal pieces at the seam screwed in at each side. The problem is, there are times when I will have to unscrew this to use the extra leaf, leaving holes on the underside of my table. Is there anything less permanent I can do that won't ruin my table?

Answer:
There are special clips for this job part of the assembly has to be screwed under the table top where the leaf joins and the clip just pulls out. Sorry dont know if they have a special name but you may be able to get them form a hardware store.

Question : Small table to dinner Table?
Hi,I am looking for a small table ( small legs) that can be extendable to a dinner table ( high legs)This was the model design aproximativly---------- x ---------- XI have seen a table like this in a french tv program but dont know where I can find it in London ?Any idea ?ThanksInstead of Entertaining group it should be in another group

Answer:
I had a table like that years ago when I lived in Germany. It was a coffee table, and had a handle at the end that wound up and was then a Dining room table.I think this was only made over there, as when I brought it back to this country no-body had seen anything like it. Sorry I can't be of any more help. if your clever on the computer, maybe you could find it on a site.

Question : space saving dining table?
Looking for suitable design for extendable dining tables? Normal serving of two for daily use and extensible serving for 4-5 people occassionally. So the table shall fix in the kitchen on a routine basis, while need to extend it for guest dining.Any multilayerd design shall be good as well. Butterfly design doesnt look good.

Answer:
Drop leaf or gate leg tables (gate leg ones are sturdier, but more legs to deal with. Both work, but they're uncomfortable to sit at when both leaves are down unless you get one that drops to a square or leave on leaf up, but that will waste some space in your kitchen. This is probably your best bet though, as they are easily found/available and come in a variety of styles.Another option is one with a second table top that slides or folds underneath the original one (square goes to rectangular or vice versa). They're harder to find though (and more $$) and still about the same space used as for a drop leaf, though much neater in overall appearance and only one "cut line" in the design. Drop in leaf tables might also work (some self-store the extra leaves), but if you don't care for the butterfly look, I dunno that you'd care for this. However, a small round table is good for two (up to a crowded four) and extends to seat 4-5 easily (crowded 6). While perhaps slightly large for two people at its smaller size, not having corners makes a big difference in getting around it.

Question : Can anyone recommend a craftsman who will make a dining room table to order, ideally based in Midlands?
Want a specific sized, square, extendable table.

Answer:
Any cabinet shop should be able to do this. Tables aren't complicated. Ask to see finish samples, and insist on a traditional lacquer finish--not polyurethane or polyester--because if the finish gets damaged, these finishes are easily repaired using easy-to-get materials. Most shops will have a photo album of their jobs for you to look at. Remember, a CLEAN shop often means attention to detail.
