Question : If you landed upon this page in my book and read it, would you find my story interesting or boring?
Would you read on? The grass around the house was an unearthly green and all snow that drifted within a few meters of it shivered into little motes of golden dust and vanished inches from the ground. Instead of a door knob there was a birdcage with something that was not a bird in it (cross a seahorse and squirrel and you’ll get the idea). Thomas whispered something strange to the creature and it coughed up a set of keys and he snatched them, opening the weird door of a weird house. When they stepped inside a purple mist wove around them, trailing from one of the house’s many, many halls. Chandeliers floated merrily into the kitchen and hung themselves over a table clothed in white linen and a banquet of food sprang from little stiches on it. Apples, bananas, sphinx’s eye, pâté, and you name it were there. It was a feast that would make a king envious. There was one plate however, that no one ate from because, Maxwell, the landlord, owned it. It was a beautiful plate. It had emerald scallops and rubies as large as beetles. In it lay ever-warm and buttery rolls of bread and fruits that must’ve been taken from some mystic garden. The plate had been there since a diner three hundred and fifty years ago, when the first shadows came into the land. Maxwell was a small man with a long and curious nose and the legend of the house had it that he smelled an event so fantastic one day, his nose flew him away!Of course nobody believed it and some believed that Maxwell himself didn’t exist, but that didn’t matter, because that was his plate, whether real or not.
Answer:
I'd keeping reading, I love a weird book

Question : Cockroaches in an apartment?
Okay we live in apartment we're about to move out of in about a month but here is the deal. We have what looks to me like German Cockroaches - it happened after new management took over. We have a 924" apartment. We have laid out Boric Acid, set traps, the Exterminator came and sprayed (given he spent less than 5 minutes attempting his job), and we have sprayed multiple cans in our home. Upon leaving we've left windows open, turned off heat, left fans on, even shut the screen and left the porch door open so it would freeze em' out. Oh and directly after the Exterminator left we set off a bomb maybe 10 minutes later. The day with the Exterminator happened about 3 days ago and we've been finding them in kitchen in a couple places, 1 on top of the computer, 1 in the linen closet, and we just went to take juice and a cup out of the fridge and it fell off the bottom of the cup. Upon looking I don't see any others in the fridge, and the majority I think is coming from the neighbors. Just wondering if anyone has any effective ideas on how to get rid of them? The only positive thing is they haven't come in the bedrooms. Our house is clean .. I don't know what else to do?
Answer:
The dreaded German roach that sprays will not kill can be gotten rid of with Combat gel or bait. It can take a few days for the roaches to eat this and take it to their hiding places where other roaches hang out. Roach motels, glue traps, are good to put on the shelves.

Question : Is it bad form for my fiance and I to have a "registry" for our honeymoon cruise?
Basically, our guests can call in and put money towards our honeymoon. We have everythong we need already for setting up our new home, (kitchen utensils, linens etc.), and are both in school and work full time, but money is still tight with all of our new expenses for the wedding. We are both putting money towards the trip (non-traditional, I know), but, we are still worried it won't be enough.
Answer:
Technically it is tacky and in bad taste because you are asking for money, but I think that it is a great idea and I plan on having one. I would recommend you having a normal registry as well, and the only place you say where you are registered are in person or on a knot.com registry. Good Luck!

Question : Should I do a bridal registry for a small wedding?
My fiance and I are having a hard time deciding whether it would be proper to do a bridal registry or not. We are only inviting immediate family and our grandparents to a wedding that we are having in a different state than where either of our families live so everyone will be traveling which will cost them money. We have lived together for a few years and have most of the items we need. We are paying for our own wedding and it will be a hardship. My fiance doesn't like people giving him gifts because he thinks he can buy himself anything he really needs and thinks we really could use money if anything but really doesn't want anything. He thinks a registry is rude. I think everyone plans to give us gifts no matter what we say. My family have told me they think I should register to help people buy gifts who are not comfortable giving money and want to give us something tangible as a keepsake. I think having some keepsakes and not just all money would be nice.Additionally, I work at a Bed Bath and Beyond and we have used my employee discount to purchase top of the line cookware, cutlery, bed linens, towels, kitchen utensils, etc. We have some china from his mother that I don't completely like but aren't sure china would be used enough to register for a different set. I would like to select a china pattern but wonder if registering for 12 place settings for a wedding with 20 guests seems excessive. I could see upgrading some things, like our toaster oven and registering for some nicer things we don't have like crystal drink ware and vases. But if most of our registry is nicer items since we have nicer basics, does this seem greedy? I probably could think of some less expensive items, like a cookie dough scoop but that seems silly. Also my fiance does not want his family to know about the registry. He is successful, more so than most of his family, and feels it would be in poor form. It seems unethical to only tell my family and I think his family will probably find out anyway.Help! Sorry my question is so long- this is complicated!
Answer:
You are thinking in exactly the right way about registering -- except for the one off-putting detail that you are associating the registry exclusively with gifts. Brides and housewives have been relying on department store registry services for generations to help them *plan* their household effects. It works like this:You decide what you would like in the long term for your household, remembering that a decade or two from now you may be hosting a bat mitzvah, a family Dewali gathering, a christening, a graduation party, whatever. As a wife and co-head of a family, part of your responsibility will be to promote and upbuild your community by hosting gracious gatherings. Think about the style of entertaining you will aspire to, and the size of gatherings you will host. Choose your patterns and the number of pieces based on that long-term plan. Arrange with a store that maintains your registry long-term (some stores call them "lifestyle" registries nowadays, but they are just the traditional permanent registry) and will notify you of sales and discontinuations, and will help you replace lost and broken pieces. Register for "open stock" that you can buy a piece or two at a time. This is *your* plan, so register for things that you will buy over the next ten or twenty years. That way you are not rudely using the registry to solicit gifts -- but, if people do buy gifts off it, you are getting things that fit well into your household. If they don't, you still carry on with your household stocking like any frugal and patient housewife.Twelve place-settings, by the way, is an awkward number. If you do full sit-down formal meals, it is more gracious to sit down 2, 6, or 10 guests, than 4 or 8 -- a balanced table just works out that way. If you do buffet dinners then you need a dinner-plate for each guest, but probably not a soup-plate, salad-plate or bread-plate. And think about what courses you normally serve: if you don't serve a salad course you don't need salad-plates. "Open stock" lets you acquire what you need, instead of getting five-piece place settings where three pieces you may not use. Think about the crystal and silver that you will need alongside the china too, and also consider table-linens.

Question : would a 10"-12" deep buffet look odd (please read)?
I have a smaller eat-in kitchen/dining combo. I am trying to make the best use of space while creating a formal feeling (Im adding mirrors on the wall to open the space up more). I have a beautiful french provencial dresser that style-wise could pass as a buffet easily. The problem: The dresser is 15" deep and makes the room look slightly crowded as-is. This space really would look more ideal with a 10"-12" deep buffet to allow additional room for the dining set. I was thinking about cutting the extra depth off the dresser including altering the drawers to fit, reattaching the back legs and creating a 'leaf' for the front so that when needed, the top could fold down for additional serving space. My question is... if you were coming in to a home where the buffet is up against a wall, behind the dining set, would you notice that its only 10"-12" deep and, would you think that out of place for the room or, would you think it is a neat idea to serve storage purpose while upscaling the room some?I like the look and think it will serve my needs (linen storage) but before I hack away at the dresser, I want others input. I cant seem to find a 10"-12" piece online, so I assume what I need is custom and Id prefer using what I have vs. going to the expense of having some thing built. The dresser I have is non sentimental but, I would use it as a dresser if I cant use it for this. Thanks
Answer:
I think you are tackling quite a job, but that is just my opinion. It will not look odd if the buffet is proportionate to the room..I would look around more for another piece of furniture..but if you want to try cutting down your piece go for it, but be prepared if it does not work.Try looking at other pieces that might work...console tv units...book shelves..that sort of thing to get the depth you want.

Question : Life minimizing...again...linens question this time...?
We're still paring down the house/possessions, and I have one more question (or rather, set of questions) about our bathroom and kitchen situation. For 2 adult people, how many of these things do we need?TowelsWashclothsHand towelsPlatesCupsBowlsSets of sheets (only one bed)Pillow CasesBedspreadsWe have entirely too much stuff, and I am trying to distill down to the number of these things is it necessary to have to live comfortably, but not have too many. We totally have too many...If it matters, I do laundry once or twice a week, depending on how much there is. I am usually on top of it.
Answer:
These are what i would think would be best! with your washing habitsTowels - 5-6 1 for the floor wash weekly.. and two each for the week wash weeklyWashcloths - 1 a week is good but it never hurts to have a few extra for guest. so maybe 3Hand towels - change them daily 5-7 wash weekly! DISH TOWELS - Change them daily 5-7 Wash weekly! Plates - normally if you don't have house parties 4 for all dishwear is fine! wash daily tho! if you have guest over for dinner i would keep anywhere between 6-8 Cups- always need more cups! i say 4 tall glasses 4 coffee cups - 4 smaller glasses more if you entertain a lot! Bowls - I would stick with the same as plates! Sets of sheets (only one bed) - change weekly 2-3 mix up colors and moods prior to bed if you count that or just getPillow Cases same as sets of sheetsBedspreads - one maybe two depending on decorations! that's what i suggest keep in mind i'm a pack rat! so if you ask my personal opinion i say keep at least 10 of everything but that's not the point here is it! but really if you wash a lot 1 item per person! but if you entertain and have house guest you will need a few extra! I use two towels when i shower but those two towels will last me a good week! I keep one on the floor for my feet and to keep the floor dry. and one for my hair ( it's really long) and one for my body and i switch them up to lessen the washing of them! so the one on the floor get's washed and i move the one that dried my hair to the floor for a week! and use the one on my body for my hair the next week! crazy but it works so i only need 3 towels for my selfbut i don't use wash clothes i use other items! lolGood luck i do admire your ablity to do this --- KUDO's!oh good link here if you haven't check it out! http://zenhabits.net/2007/08/a-guide-to-creating-a-minimalist-home/its a guide for the mininlist home! and other great organizing tips and stuff! zenhabits.net

Question : VOCs from caulking set into bedroom linens? HELP!?
Hey everyone. This might qualify as one of the strangest questions you've ever read on here, but it's in fact serious. About 6-7 months ago, I decided to fill an opening on the bottom of my bedroom wall. The opening was about a 1/4 inch space along the length of the wall. So, I decided to use caulking. Not being very up to task on Home Improvement, I grabbed a tube of Kwik Seal Plus bathroom/Kitchen from my step-dad. I put about 1/4 inch bead along the 5-6 foot of the wall, maybe more in some areas (the space between carpet & bottom of wall). The reason being, a draft coming up from my smoking grandfather & family, which left my room reeking of cigarettes. Well, about 4 hours later it started to cure and give it's fumes off (VOCs) and it was overwhelming for a short time, but I opened up windows in my room & it subsided, and I slept in my room that night. Two days later I removed the caulking (still not fully cured) & thought removing it would cease the smell but the damage was already done supposedly. Well, still to this day there is an awkward smell in my room, almost like a sweet smell, but it's not pleasant, and I think it's from the VOCs in the caulk which have settled into everything. My curtains stink, my bedsheets, mattress & pillow. I even put new ones on awhile after & they still picked up this smell. Even myself, believe that I took on this smell from spending time in my room & sleeping in my bed. I don't know what sort of danger i'm in because I haven't any tell-tale symptoms of over exposure (not that they would be around now, as this was 6/7 months ago, the problems would only be in the first week while it cured). The problem is I cannot get the smell out of my room, fabrics in my room. It's been even bothering me to the point I've considered hanging myself because I smell like it. In January '10 I quit smoking, and lasted 10.5 months, and after awhile I noticed how foul cigarettes smoke really did smell, I hadn't noticed it while I smoked. Well, the stress that this problem caused drove me back to smoking, funny right? I just want to move out now, We live with my grandparents but my mom & stepdad are in the market for a house. I just feel as if this smell is now permanant on me, and i'll never get away from it (sounds crazy, but seriously). I tried everything, sprays, airing my rooms for weeks, I mean everything. I've read about onions absorbing odors such as wet paint, but I doubt it'll work in this case. What on earth do you think I could/should do? Can me sleeping in my bed smelling the scents of the set-in VOCs from caulk give me problems or like... cancer down the road? I'm just scared and want to get out of here, to the point i've thought about suicide.. Any thought/ideas/help what-so-ever? Thank you guys, Davey.
Answer:
Wash the bedding again, this time add Boraxo to the wash. It very effectively deodorizes fabrics...it will even get cigarette smoke smell out of fabric.Next, get several boxes of baking soda and open them and stand them around the room. Baking soda absorbs odours from the air. It will actually remove the onion smell from a refrigerator (and that can last forever!). You may need to put fresh boxes in every couple of weeks to keep the room odour free. Now, this smell remains because some of the caulking remains somewhere and you need to find it and remove it. If you find it is in a place you cannot remove it from, then seal the smell in by painting it over with polyurethane. If it is in a hole, like behind some panelling or something, seal the hole. The polyurethane smell will dissipate within 48 hours, sooner if the baking soda is in the room. The smell may be clinging to your hair which is why you think you smell like it. A good shampoo will get rid of that...smells of that type cling to oils on our skin and in our hair and by washing with a soap/shampoo that has a surfactant (that is what makes it bubble and foam), the oils are washed away and the smells with them. It is unlikely that you are at any risk for cancer or other health problems down the road as this stuff is approved for used in buildings where people live. Many chemicals do a thing called "outgassing" when they are first used (think of that "new car smell" or the smell of new carpeting) but they do no lasting harm, they are just obnoxious while they are around. But STOP SMOKING---that WILL give you cancer down the road!!Start with the baking soda and Boraxo and things should be fine quite soon,Good luck

Question : What does the phrase refer to?
"Sunday black, and sea-cloth polished on the bench of rowing" -- from Merry Men by Robert L. Stevenson. What's the meaning of Sunday black, sea-cloth, and bench of rowing? Original paragraph is like this:The garden was fenced with the same wood that I had noted in the boat; there were chairs in the kitchen covered with strange brocade; curtains of brocade hung from the window; a clock stood silent on the dresser; a lamp of brass was swinging from the roof; the table was set for dinner with the finest of linen and silver; and all these new riches were displayed in the plain old kitchen that I knew so well, with the high-backed settle, and the stools, and the closet bed for Rorie; with the wide chimney the sun shone into, and the clear-smouldering peats; with the pipes on the mantelshelf and the three-cornered spittoons, filled with sea-shells instead of sand, on the floor; with the bare stone walls and the bare wooden floor, and the three patchwork rugs that were of yore its sole adornment—poor man’s patchwork, the like of it unknown in cities, woven with homespun, and Sunday black, and sea-cloth polished on the bench of rowing.
Answer:
In the Christian west around the 18-19th century, Sunday was a day of rest: a time to devote to the praise of God. In the outer islands, where deaths at sea were common, people were considered particularly God-fearing and aware of His wrath. If I were to refer to clothing, which is perhaps a phrase you may be more familiar with. 'Sunday best' - was always to be worn for church (and high-holidays), basically to look presentable in the eyes of God, and your community. It was your VERY best clothing - so ideally, no holes, no patches, etc.If you were so poor that you didn't have anything that had no holes or patches - to show you still had a degree of pride and self-worth, you took special care with what you had, and the way in which you looked after it. Stevenson here is describing something that is not simply black - but something that has had some additional effort to make it as black as it could ever be. Some well equipped rowing boats of that period may have benches covered with heavy hessian woven matting - to stop a man sliding off while rowing against heavy seas. With constant effort, the weight and movement of the man might effectively scour and polish the wood immediately under where he sits. The tone of the piece you quote suggests that special preparation has been made to mourn the passing of someone or something substantial.
