Editorial Review :
Coffee is 98 percent water. Often overlooked, the quality of the water is as important as the quality of the coffee. A good rule of thumb is that if your water doesn't taste good from the tap, it won't taste any better in your coffee. That's why Cuisinart suggests adding a water filter to the coffeemaker. The Cuisinart DCC-RWF charcoal water filter removes chlorine, calcium, bad tastes and odors, for the purest cup of coffee every time.

Questions & Answers
Question : Black and white Kitchen. idea please?
My kitchen has black and white checkered flooring with a beech kitchen. The small kitchen appliances are all black and silver. kitchen tiles are white. Previously I had brick effect wall paper along the end wall and i though it looked good. What do you think.? I have now painted this wall redbut i am unsure. Thinking of adding a few small red accessories tea towel etc.I am torn between keeping the red or going back to the brick. When kitchen is untidy red seem to emphasize this I think i have already make my mind up but what do you think. Thanks annemarie
Answer:
Pictures would help. A bold color like red should be used sparingly. Or masked. Or everytime you enter the kitchen it will feel like the black obelisque on 2001 space odyssey and you will feel like one of the monkeys hooting around it. Hopefully it;s a warm red not a cool one. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_myX5Q4qMDhY/SyVlXF9OX0I/AAAAAAAADbo/heIOaO5BMtM/s400/2001_space_odyssey_fg 2b.jpgOne way to reduce the "RED" on the wall is to put a large simple image with a white or black frame up. http://www.art.com/FrameStudio/default.asp?apnum=1036546&PODConfigID=0&EmailID=&FID=&ui=53D601487826 49B5B3977ED2BDC9DB9B&customerzoneid=3 Also consider lighting or shelving on that wall. Or altering the paint with a mottled whitewash over it. Or my favorite is adding the 3d look of plaster stencils http://www.victorialarsen.com/TechniquesAnswers/TwoToneDoneSML.jpg

Question : Feeling Pinch, Stores Woo Lagging Shoppers. Evaluate Article?
Lackluster sales in this holiday season have retailers scrambling to wring a few last dollars from procrastinators by slashing prices, extending hours and wooing customers more persistently than last year. The moves show that retailers' strategy during this final weekend before Christmas -- when about 10% of holiday sales are expected to take place -- has become increasingly reliant on the same promotions and marathon hours once unique to the "Black Friday" weekend following Thanksgiving. But the discounts also reveal the pinch stores are in this year as the credit crunch, rising gas prices and winter storms have taken a toll on companies dependent on end-of-year sales. The tough economy has left aisles more empty this year. Total foot traffic at U.S. retail outlets took an 8.9% dive during the second full week of December, compared with the same period last year, according to an estimate from ShopperTrak RCT Corp., which bases its numbers on a formula that involves an electronic count of shoppers in malls and other retail outlets nationwide.A bright spot, however, has been online, where aggressive discounting and cut-rate deals on fast shipping have contributed to a surge in spending. From Nov. 1 to Dec. 16, online shoppers spent $23.5 billion, 19% higher than the corresponding days last year, according to comScore Inc., a Reston, Va., market research firm that tracks Web spending and traffic. Videogames, consoles and accessories are the fastest-growing category, more than doubling from the comparable period last year. Furniture, appliances and equipment ranks second, up 63%, while event tickets and consumer electronics are up 29% and 24%, respectively. Now, a final push is on, both online and in stores. Web retailers continued to hunt for business by cutting shipping charges to seal deals before the pre-Christmas shipping window closes. Shoebuy.com, a Boston-based unit of IAC/InterActive Corp. offered free express shipping until today. Online handbag merchant eBags upgraded purchases made by Wednesday from standard shipping to two-day air-shipping through UPS for no extra cost.Brick-and-mortar stores, meanwhile, retooled their hours for the weekend, hoping to spark their own shopping flurry. J.C. Penney Co. stores are staying open until midnight tonight and Saturday. Select Macy's Inc. stores on the East Coast will stay open nonstop throughout the weekend -- 107 hours straight for one branch in Queens. And New York-based FAO Schwarz made discounts of 25% to 50% on certain toys. Ed Schmults, the chief executive officer at FAO Schwarz, said that while foot traffic was up, business had not been as booming throughout the season as he hoped. The National Retail Federation, a trade group, is predicting just 4% in sales growth for 2007, the smallest growth rate in five years. Britt Beemer, chairman of America's Research Group, paints an even grimmer picture: He lowered his forecast of 2% retail sales growth to 1.8%, his lowest forecast in nearly 10 years. In the apparel category, men's clothing has showed modest single-digit growth through the first 20 days of the shopping season, according to MasterCard Spending Pulse, a unit of MasterCard Advisors, which tracks spending of all types. But women's apparel -- which last year constituted three times the sales of men's -- has been a major disappointment, as shoppers have avoided big purchases. Sales were down 5.7% from the same time last year.Retailers have responded with a flurry of price cuts, but large inventory remains in some stores. One of Gap Inc.'s Old Navy stores in downtown Chicago on Wednesday had piles of festive sweaters marked down to $20 from $36.50. Women's coats still stuffed the racks, despite being already marked down 50%, and its signature "performance fleece," also half off, was stacked eight shelves high. The bad tidings for apparel have left some retailers looking for other items to push. At Banana Republic, also owned by Gap, $64 gift sets of its perfumes, body creams and shower creams were marked down 30%. Gold-boxed gift sets of a new line of bath products at Ann Taylor Stores Corp. stores were discounted to $19.50 from $29. At Limited Brands Inc.'s Victoria's Secret, stores were piled with beauty gift sets, many 40% off.Meanwhile luxury goods are expected to have a good season this year, and retail consultant Frederick Crawford of AlixPartners predicts "pockets of good news" for high-end retail. For brands like Prada and Gucci, he expects to see 5% to 7% growth.According to retail surveys, electronics sales were down 0.5% in the three-week period between Nov. 18 and Dec. 9 compared to a year ago, according to Stephen Baker, vice president of industry analysis for market watcher NPD Group. He said consumers in recent years have been delaying purchases until closer to Christmas, which may account for the slowdown.Indeed, Angela Smith has waited until the last week to make her purchases. A 39-year-old bank employee in Dallas, Ms. Smith said she is waiting for prices to drop further as well as trying to spend less. For her three nephews, ages 12, 8 and 7, she plans to buy remote-controlled cars, which Wal-Mart Stores Inc. initially priced at $59 and has since dropped to $49. "I am going to swing by this weekend and see if they are going to take it down one more time," says Ms. Smith, who was shopping for a co-worker's present at her local Wal-Mart midweek.Home-furnishings retailers, fighting the weak housing market, are being particularly aggressive with their promotions this year. At Williams-Sonoma Inc.'s Pottery Barn store on Chicago's Michigan Avenue, Christmas-tree-shaped candles were discounted 50%, and holiday garlands of fake evergreen branches were 30% off. Wrapped gifts such as silver jewelry boxes, also marked down 30%, were stacked high Wednesday afternoon.Home-improvement outfits like Lowe's Cos. Inc. and Home Depot Inc. are destined to be hardest hit, says AlixPartners' Mr. Crawford. "Consumers are absolutely showing us that they will be delaying discretionary purchases" like gear to remodel a kitchen, he said.A boom-bust pattern is typical after Thanksgiving's Black Friday discounts, which encourages a flurry of purchases early but leads to a tapering off in early December, killing shopping momentum. This year the pattern was more pronounced: A double-digit sales surge on Black Friday exceeded retailers' expectations; but come December, throngs of shoppers didn't return. There was one exception, however: online retail. Web merchants have discounted and promoted heavily this season, say industry analysts. Shipping promotions have been particularly popular. Sixty-eight percent of surveyed Web retailers said they are offering express shipping promotions this year, up from 49% last year, according to Scott Silverman, executive director of Shop.org, an online retail trade group and unit of National Retail Federation. As the boom continues, these companies are becoming increasingly creative to draw customers. This year Ice.com, a Montreal-based Internet jeweler, has rolled out new videos to promote products and free overnight shipping. It has experimented with new marketing tricks such as buying front-page ads on Microsoft Corp.'s MSN and Yahoo Inc.'s Web sites this week. Ice.com even tried to tap influencers to drive word-of-mouth among blogs, magazine mentions and celebrities.
Answer:
Good article. Sounds like they arent doing so hot.

Question : What are you looking to buy this Black Friday?
I am looking for DVDs, board games, clothes, shoes, accessories, and some small electronics/appliances. How about you? Oh and books books books!! Also what time will you be waking up to shop? I am starting at 12am!! Off to walmart at 4am, shop, sleep, wakeup, shop some more!My Walmart is 24 hours also, they just shut it down in prep for the sales they are going to have. Then they open the doors and we all run in looking for what we want!
Answer:
walmart is 24 hours here.. i can go there anytime lol. my boyfriend works for menards. for those who have no idea what that is, its a home improvement store like lowes and home depo. for the past 2 years i end up going to menards at 5 am to shop. my boyfriend will tell me whats on sale before i go and make a game plan for that morning. usually he has a few things he wants me to grab. the employees cant shop when there on the clock. we can payroll deduct the items on his check and get an extra 10 percent off the sale prices. after menards, ill hit up places near by like target, khols, gordmans, etc. i shop for just immediate family. so my list is pretty short so i just bargain hunt for extras. never usually a list in hand. i work for a machine shop so i just enjoy having the day off. then ill go home and wrap presents and watch movies and relax.

Question : How much money can be expected to be made from a good consignment store?
There are a handful of them in the area I live, but none like I'm used to. These primarily focus on clothes and accessories. I'd like to do that, but also home decor, small appliances, furniture, toys, etc. What could I reasonably expect to earn a month or week?
Answer:
An impossible question to answer unless you provide some details.

Question : What color should I paint my kitchen cabinets?
I have a 1930's ranch style home. Most of my decor I would describe as "modern craftsman". I love clean simple lines but also love 'uncluttered' antiques. I also love color. The more the better. I just painted my kitchen a color called "Chaps" from Menards. It is kind of a terra cotta or spiced pumpkin. And now I want to paint my kitchen cabinets. They are currently painted white and look very dingy. The kitchen is 12'x15' with 8' ceilings and with 1 small North facing window and 1 large East facing window. It has medium oak laminate wood flooring and all of the window trim and baseboards are also white. My appliances are all stainless and small appliances and accessories are black. The countertops are very light; creamy whites with swirls of the terra cotta color (but I can't afford to change them out right now). I am thinking of painting the cabinets black. I want a dramatic, modern look, but I don't want to make the room seem too dark or small. Is there some other color that would look better? I am afraid to go with something creamy or white because I don't want it to look too "cottagey or country". Also, if I change the cabinet color what do I do with the woodwork and window trim? Do they stay white or do I paint them also? MariL
Answer:
I would try a medium maroon, or similar - the "orangey" color of the chaps should be very nicely complemented by a deeper purpleish tone. Don't go too dark though. At eye level, blacks are going to shrink the room. You want your darks lower in height and lighten your tones as you go up.

Question : I'm redecorating my apartment.?
I have a small one bedroom apartment. I have had to same decor for 5 years and I want a change. I want to make it fun and girly, but mature enough to not make a guy cringe at the sight of it. I'm thinking painting the walls lime green in the bathroom and having pink accessories with towels that have green specks. The toilet, shower, and sink are all white and the counter top is white marble. I have no idea what to do with the other rooms. I want to paint and take down all the decor, but keep the furniture. I have cocoa colored furniture and slate and black tables in the living room. All my appliances in the kitchen are white and the counter top is hunter green (which I absolutely hate!) All the floors are shades of tan with the same carpet in the living room and bedroom and linoleum in the kitchen and bathroom. Keep in mind that the rooms are not that big so even bold or bright colors are not going to be a that big a deal.
Answer:
Okay here's what I think you should do. Paint the walls a creamy light brown in the living room so then they wont cringe at the sight of it and so that when the light bounces off of it, it will look really pretty. Then in the bathrooms you can paint the walls any color because its yours and you can do whatever. or what some people do is paint the wall in the back one color and then leave the other walls like white or light gray. It would look really pretty and any guy would like that. Just an idea.

Question : Real estate legal question - help?
I just recently sold my house (everything is signed) I started selling stuff as I'm downsizing to something much smaller (like my pool heater) Now my realtor is saying that this was sold with the house. However, I have not included pool heater in my inclusion list, nor in my exclusion list. I included pool & accessories (what a normal person considers the usual knicknacks). I consider the pool heater (a $1,500 value) not an accessory but an important piece of equipment and without it, the pool still works just fine. It's the same for my bbq which is attached to my gas line, much as in the same light are the buyers expecting this to be included? Neither of these are permanently attached to the house. My appliances were not listed as included nor excluded in the contract but no one seems to be making a stink this particular discrepancy. Help please!!!!!

Question : Triple question here................If you don't like to read don't bother to click.?
1) We will get divorced. during our marriage she opened 2 credit cards and WE spent them. They total roughly $10.000. The smaller one ($2000) went to collection agency and the bigger one $8000 didn't. Recently after I found out it is not on collection yet I notified my STBX but she took no action. I told her I will help her repay as soon as I get financially stable because I spent it with her but legally I doubt I have to pay. SHE TOLD ME I HAVE TO PAY HALF OR SHE WILL TAKE ME TO COURT. THEN SHE SAID WHEN WE SIGN SEPARATION/CUSTODY AGREEMENT WE MUST INCLUDE HER BILLS SO I CAN SIGN TO PAY HALF.My 1st question is, if the credit cards were solely on her name, am I obligated to help her repay?KEEP IN MIND I AM WILLING TO HELP REPAY BUT NOT UNDER PRESSURE.Second question. She also purchased a Q-size bed and some expensive dresser and accessories totaling $5000. I think it went to collection but not sure she won't tell me. She took it with her when she moved out. I told her since she took it I have nothing to do with it plus we barely used it. She said OH YOU USED IT TOO.Do I have anything with that bed and dresser? And third question. I heard that when married people divorce or separate they share everything 50/50. Well she took it all. That's OK it is not the end of the world. But is she pisses me off, can I do anything about my part of furniture, appliances etc that she took or once she took, it it's hers? Thanks
Answer:
Different judges can rule completely different outcomes to surprisingly similar cases. Once again a good lawyer is your best option but it is up to the 1 judge you face because the "he says she says" can actually go a long way once they profile yours and hers characters. You'd be surprised how screwed one can be for playing it safe in terms of oh its not the end of the world attitude.

Answer:
I would say that the pool heater is included iF:a) it was mentioned by either party before the agreement signed, orb) the weather in your city is cold, which makes the heater a necessity for any pool
