Questions & Answers
Question : How do food webs interact with compost bins?
I know how worms work in compost bins but what else is there?

Answer:
-They don't Decompose very well- at All. :(

Question : Suggestions on compost bins?
I'm going to buy a compost bin for my yard. I've done some searching on the web, but wondered if anyone had any recommendations on makes and models that seem to work well. Thanks for any ideas anyone has!

Answer:
Some things you need to keep in mind when in comes to compost bins:1) how much room will you be able to set aside for your bin.2) how much material will you be able to put into the bin, thus how much compost will you generate.3) how quickly do you want "finished" compost; the more you turn the compost, the quicker you will have compost.I would make my bins from chicken wire and steel pins that I drove into the ground. I would have 2 bins going at a time. One I would turn into the other to speed the process, and then keep turning them back and forth until I had finished compost.A lot of your decision will depend upon how much time and energy you want to spend to get your compost.Good Luck and Happy GardeningEDIT:To the person below, bins will produce relative to the amount of material put into them. Punching holes in a garbage can is pointless.Having read or heard about a topic does not give an answerer much credence, experience is a pretty good instructor.

Question : Ok how to i KEEP earthworms alive outside in compost bins?
mY 4 OTHER bro and sis me and my mom and my dad produce 10 pounds of organic kitchen scraps every 2 days i have 4 large compost bins 2 are full with worms 1 is about to be full and the other hasnt started yet how do i keep the worms alive in the bin over the winter? SHould i digg holes the sizes of the 2 worm bins and bury them keeping the compost warm wut should i do? Hopefully up here in new york brooklyn we have like the last 2 winters sorta warm !!!!!!!! plz tell me how how how?????????????????????????

Answer:
Believe it or not, worms have survived for millions of years without our help. They'll most likely survive the next, also. They will just do what worms always do in the winter. If you have the space indoors, you can set up some worm bins so that you can still compost your kitchen scraps. Worms will consume 1/2 their weight in kitchen scraps every day.Check out the link below for an inexpensive worm bin system. We have one in our house and there is never any odor from it.Visit our website for more gardening ideas at-http://www.gardening-at-the-crossroads.com/Good Luck and Happy Gardening from Cathy and Neal!

Question : What happens to plastic bags that are placed into the green bins designed for compost?
I live in Toronto and compost is now collected in green bins. However, plastic bags are allowed to be included. What is the exact method of processing this waste? Is it really sorted the way it should be?

Answer:
Plastic bags don't break down and de-compose therefore there is no use putting them in the green bins.I just visited a recycling plant actually and I learned the whole process. It is completely complicated but it is sorted the way it should be, the sort everything out, like the plastic bags go with plastic bags, carboard with cardboard... etc. They sort it and compact it into large rectangular "lumps" and then weigh them out, most around 900-1700 pounds. We live in Hawaii so we have to do that and then ship it over the the mainland to be re-made because their are no processing plants here.

Question : people with compost bins: Can we compost wood hangers and regular cotton clothes please?
I want y'all to try it in your compost bin and tell me if it works please. Sorry for being bossy. Have a good weekend by the way. Jared out.

Answer:
So we put that crap in our compost and get back with you? When you add high intense carbon items into your compost, all your going to have is compost with wooden hangers and dirty clothes in it. If you are needing to boost the volume (to much green stuff etc.) of your compost, shred it finely and add it slowly. The easiest would be to give it to Goodwill or just make mulch if the clothes are nasty.

Question : Compost bins. Will the rotting process speed up if they are placed in the sunniest place in the garden?
I mean the black plastic compost bins.

Answer:
All compost bins work best when warm and putting it in a warm part of the garden will help. But the best way to get it rotting is to get it to generate its own heat from the inside this is achived by keeping a good balance of the right things in the compost bin. as they rot they produce enzimes that then help rot the next thing you put in. i use kitchen peelings, grass, broadleaf weeds but only once the heap is hot or the seeds may survive and get spread on the garden, shredded paper. ect

Question : Compost bins?
I have just bought a plastic type compost bin, i have put it on a level surface on top of soil but wont the mice be able to dig their way under to get to the scraps? Any tips please?

Answer:
Well yeah but as long as you are putting in the proper foods (no meat/animal/Dairy), and are putting that in the middle of the pile you will be fine.

Question : I am looking for compost bins for a school. Are there any 4 x 4's readymade?
I'm looking on line and mainly see the tumblers. We will have quite a bit of food from the cafeteria plus browns and greens. If anyone has used compost bins for schools and has purchased them, we would appreciate store information. Thanks.

Answer:
why don`t you get the students involved by getting the woodwork department to make them ! all you need is some old palletts!!

Question : Compost bins, I have several plastic compost bins, is it a good idea to leave the lids?
off occasionally to let rain in.

Answer:
It's not really necessary. Well mixed compost should have adequate moisture from the "green" stuff involved (fresh grass clippings, kitchen waste, etc.). If your compost really needs extra moisture, a brief sprinkle with the hose should do the trick. The difficulty with leaving compost uncovered is that, if it gets TOO wet, it will just turn into a pile of wet yucky stuff and stop composting properly.... and then you have to tear the pile apart, spread it out, let it dry, and start over. Better to have it a bit on the dry side and just sprinkle it once in a while.

Question : Can you add cooked leftovers into home garden compost bins?
I have heard this shouldn't be done, and I would like to know why.

Answer:
Also it interferes with the reaction of the vegetative growth, and any meat will also attract rats, skunks, etc. Skunks and raccoons where we live are riddled with rabies, so if you have kids or pets, do not do it. It also can stink very bad. Meat, oil, butter etc. Steamed veggies with no sauce or anything should be okay, but not with butter or oil.
