Questions & Answers
Question : What's wrong with my petuntias in hanging baskets?
Help! I have two petuntias hanging baskets that are starting to thin out at the base. Little by little they lose there leaves starting at the base and upward. There are still a lot of blooms though. They are in sun most of the day. I water them once a day. And I gave them some fertilizer that is suppose to last for the growing season. Any thoughts?

Answer:
Your petunias could probably take a good pruning to about six inches of stalk. Also, petunias prefer constant pinching of the seed heads, which transfers energy to new growth. It's possible you could be overwatering; if you water them once a day. I judge the need for water by lifting the pot. If it feels heavy, it doesn't need more water. If it's light and airy, then water deeply and make the pot heavy once again.

Question : Does anyone have a good ideal how to make a self water thing to put in hanging baskets?
I put hanging baskets of flowers on my porch. It gets a lot of sun their.I thought maybe I could think of away to make a self watering bottle or something to put in the pots.Do you have ideal how to make this.Thanks.

Answer:
There is no easy way of doing it with existing pots that are already planted. There are a multitude of web pages with instructions on how to make self waterers . They all revolve arouns the concept of using a wick to wick water into your flower pot. The best thing for you right now are those water globe products as seen on TV. Yes they do work but you have to make sure to keep the water full in them. Question : Will outdoor hanging baskets of petunia and impatients make it thru the winter if I bring them indoors?
I would love to save my hanging baskets for the summer, should I cut them back, take clippings, or is it a fruitless task?

Answer:
The impatients may, but the petunias are doubtful. Since impatients need little light they will most likely do alright. The petunias need full sun though and would require a lot of bright light.

Question : What type of flowers do you recommend for hanging baskets?
Last year I was successful with my patio potted plants for the first time ever, so now I'm thinking of hanging baskets. What plants are long lasting and pretty and good for hanging baskets?

Answer:
well depends on where you are and how much sun you have.Me I live in Alaska and can only have potted plants on my deck. I get sun, but there is a deck above mine so sunlight is medium. we'll start there...I have had good luck with......fuchsias, wave petunias (or supertunias..they are trailing), begonias, Chinese purple bell vine (really love the shade..also called rhodochiton pretty purple), there is a trailing Iris out now (but I have not tried but have seen), brachiacombe, pansies in a pot are pretty too (they look pretty in a hanging strawberry bag in the shade), there are trailing snapdragons out, vinca, I stay away from lobelia though they look nice at first but by the end of season look rather like unkempt beards. Try skyflower instead of lobelia. I've put forget-me-nots in a basket as well and been happy, as well as catnip (though keep it up where the cats cannot get it right off, lol.one key to keep blooms all year is to deadhead them a lot. check your local greenhouses I hit several around me for other ideas and ot see what is new for the year

Question : Can anyone recommend some really pretty plants for hanging baskets?
And is there any plants for hanging baskets that will come back every year?

Answer:
ti is how i would do a basket, I would line my baskets with either sustainable moss or a hanging basket liner, I would have a central upright plant or very small cordiline in the middle to give height, then i would place something like trailing geraniums or petunias at different levels poking them through the sides of the baskets, also I would put some mixed colours trailing lobelias (They are so dainty and pretty and made of different pastelly colours (beautiful) they all usually come in small individual plug plants at the garden centres usually sold in 6/8/10/12 's use a multi purpose compost and put some water retaing gel or crystals mixed in with the compost, this will help retain the water and you should not have to water so often. These plants will gradually get bigger and bigger and you will not be able to see any of the basket itself. There is another way of course which can look very effective and that is to put several of all the same plants in the basket, this also looks good. Perhaps trailing begonias (beautiful) trailing fuchsias (fab ballerinas, these like shade though, dont tolerate sun too well) there are lots of trailing plants you can use bidens is bright gold, trailing verbena (purple or white or pink) and of course the good old reliable impatiens, (busy lizzies but busy lizzies demand a LOT of water otherwise they sag very quickly)) the list goes on and on. When you go to your garden centre, you will be gobsmacked at the amount of choice you have, there is usually a picture of the plant and also whether they are upright or trailing....Happy gardening, Have fun :o)

Question : Can anyone give me ideas for the best flowers for hanging baskets?
I wanted to put up some hanging baskets on my porch and I am really tired of Impatiens...and common flowers. Does anyone know of some roses that would do well in a hanging basket, or any other ideas for something different that cascades. Thanks

Answer:
Wave petunia for sun. Purple puts on the best show. Put three in a 10 or 12 inch pot and fertilize, they are heavy feeders that like sun and require no cleaning. For shade have you tried tuberous begonias? They drop flowers but look tropical. Again, fertilize. Osmocote helps. There are some cloleous that do well in a hanger, I have one at the greenhouse that takes some sun and shade but its name escapes me at the moment.Bidens for full sun, those things go crazy and its hard to kill, loaded with yellow daisy like flowers all season.Lofus is a vine that is hanger capapable and it goes up and down and all over the place and can be unruly but humming birds love it.You could always mix a pot of all sorts of stuff. Experiment, have fun.Best wishes.Email me if you want more tips, I'm slow on responding but I will get back to you if you give me some details.

Question : What plants give maximum impact in containers and hanging baskets?
My patio area is boring nd I want lots of containers and hanging things...i live in the Uk...what is the best things to have in the containers? like green things that drape.....I have some Ivies and some baskets with various trailing flowers...but I want more and things with bigger leaves....any advice?

Answer:
I love ivy in hanging baskets and also those spider plants - they are all very easy to grow once planted. Another thing I have grown in hanging baskets with a lot of success are strawberries - you can often find them in kits or you can just buy the roots and then plant them. While they don't usually produce much fruit the first year, by the second year they do very well - and they give off really pretty little white flowers, too - not to mention you can get a snack while sitting on your patio. Here is how to grow strawberries in containers it is not too hard:http://growingstrawberrytips.com/articles/growing-strawberries-in-containers/Good luck!

Question : What flowers are best for my hanging baskets which are always in the shade?
I love to put out my hanging baskets but the front of my house is north facing and they never get to see any sun. Does anyone know which flowers would grow better in the shade?

Answer:
go for a mainly foliage display with the odd impatiens or fuchsia for a dash of colour

Question : how do plants in hanging baskets obtain optimum nutrients?
being inside a basket and above the ground, how can the microorganisms and creatures such as worms reach the soil or compost? Is this one of the reasons hanging baskets are regularly refilled and replanted?

Answer:
Hanging baskets rely completely on the planter for all nutrients. Some prefer to feed them with a liquid feed, others add slow release granular fertilizer. The usual plants chosen for hanging baskets are annuals that only bloom for the one season. So next year fresh compost and plants are used. Not just hanging baskets but all pots and tubs need the growing medium changed regularly to keep them at their best.Beulah

Question : I need help with my hanging baskets of annuals?
I have bought two hanging baskets from Costco. They were previously made up of petunias and some other purple flower that is tiny. Anyways they are dying and I have been watering them, but it seems that they just can not get water. Every year I seem to go through the same thing with pre made baskets. I am wondering if there is anything I can do to help them survive throughout the summer?

Answer:
if you can find a really big tub...fill it with water and soak them there for 20 mins
