Questions & Answers
Question : Paper Towels in Compost Bins?
I won a Compost Bin at my job's Green Fair and am excited as this would be a great addition for my organic vegetable gardens. I have researched the do's and dont's as far as what to add to a compost bin and just want to know a little more on the Do's as far as kitchen items are concerned. Are paper towels allowed? Shredded newspapers are a yes, so I wondered about shredded paper towels. Thanks and any other tips to add or don't add would be wonderful! Thanks, guys!
Answer:
I've been composting for years and put all paper products into it. You can shred it for quicker decomposition but it's not necessary. I put all food scraps except dairy, bone, meat and grease. That helps keep the critters out. I also put in it daily coffee grounds and filter, tea bags, any stale food ie chips, cookies (with 4 kids, lots of waste). I throw a couple hand fulls of pine needles and leaves on top of each bowl of kitchen stuff. Dump a bucket of water on it weekly. Done. When that bin is full (5 ft round container) I let it sit and start another one. Hope this helps.

Question : Is there an alternative to getting rid of vegetable scraps?
I use fresh fruits and vegetables on a regular basis and all the scraps get thrown away. I have no use for a compost bin or worm farm because I don't have a garden, and I have absolutely no desire to start one. Is the landfill my only other option?
Answer:
Actually, the garbage disposal, for those things that can be put down it, is a far better choice than the land fill. At the land fill, it will be buried and that's that. However, by being put down the garbage disposal, those scraps will go to a water treatment facility where the scraps will be removed and eventually turned into fertilizer. So it is being used, not wasted.

Question : HELP... I have maggots in my vegetable compost bin .How do i kill these horrible creatures???
HELP... I have maggots in my vegetable compost bin .How do i kill these horrible creatures???
Answer:
Gee whiz, you provided the best environment for them, and now you want them dead? They're just breaking down the food. They aren't horrible. It's not like they are in your house. I had this problem too. It's time to spread the compost around your yard (far from your doors to your house) and start over in the compost bin The maggots will disappear. Make sure you are mixing the right proportion of vegetable scraps and lawn clippings and are turning the compost regularly. Google "compost maintenance" and learn from those more learned in this topic than me. Good luck.

Question : Are plastic/rubber storage containers good for vegetable gardening?
Last year, we did a lot of downsizing. Now I have at least 10 deep containers. I would like to do container gardening as I have lots of arthritis and I can't do ground gardening. Should I sterilize or bleach the containers first? I recall seeing a neat garden at Arlington, Virginia, Main Library. They recycled recycle bins. All the food that they raised was distributed to the needy! Thanks for your help.
Answer:
Hi T-RexThe cleaner your garden soil and tools are, the less likely you are to have problems with diseases being spread, that only makes sense. However, there is a difference between a large farm that has thousands of dollars at stake and a person just wanting to grow a few plants. After all, plants grow in dirtI have never bleached anything and I do fine while I read about others who bleach their tools etc to prevent the spread of diseases. It all boils down to what makes you comfortable and how much time you have to spend. Do what you'd like to do and enjoy your gardening. I hope your arthritis gets better.Johnny

Question : Is it okay to put used vegetable oil and sunflower oil in a home compost bin?
Yeah, great ideas, but I'm talking about the bit left after you've roasted potatoes and parsnips on a Sunday. I'm not sure anyone can run their car on that, or that its worth a trip to the recycling centre.
Answer:
Vegetable, sunflower, peanut oil or any cooking oil is fully biodegradable. It is composted within our bodies when we eat foods that were cooked or otherwise prepared with these organic oils. So, yes, you can put it in your composting bin. But don't put in more than will be absorbed by the other contents of your bin so that the oil doesn't drip through ; in case your bin has bottom leakage. However, Petroleum based oils must never be combined with any sort of nutrient cycle. These are the automotive lubrication and fuel products used for heating as well as industrial purposes.

Question : Does vegetable and fruit waste go in the black or green bin?
If you don't have a composting bin, which bin should vegetable peelings, banana skins, etc go in; The green bin or black wheelie bin?
Answer:
As I understand it, fruit & vegetable peel etc. goes in normal garbage. Garden waste goes in 'garden' recycle bin. It is put through mulcher & used as garden mulch. Vegetable waste breaks down & goes mouldy or slimy. Totally unsuitable for recycling but good land fill because it will break down & fertilise. We also have to be careful what type of garden refuse we recycle. Nothing with prickles or thorns to prick the unwary gardener or person loading mulcher. I try to keep the worst weeds like ones with tiny sticky balls out of recycling. I'd hate to give another gardner problems. We can't put creeping or climbing plants in either. They all go into regular rubbish.

Question : Is it safe to place a compost bin next to a vegetable patch?
Is it safe to place a compost bin next to a vegetable patch?
Answer:
That is the best place to put it then you don't have to travel far when you want to use the compost also when you pick your veg from your garden you put the waste in to the the bin and make more compost for next year so good luck .there is one thing you will need to know as well the best thing for home made compost is human pee yes I did say pee the best is from a man who has been to the pub get him pee into the compost this will help to degrade the grass waste.
